Glaser Weil Achieves Settlement for Photographer in Copyright Disputes Over Paul Newman and Stevie Wonder Images

Glaser Weil successfully represented acclaimed photographer Al Satterwhite and NO Limit, LLC, a subsidiary of Newman’s Own Foundation, in a significant copyright infringement and rights of publicity matter involving unauthorized commercial use of Mr. Satterwhite’s iconic photographs of Paul Newman and Stevie Wonder and the publicity rights of Paul Newman.

As alleged in the filed complaint, Miami-based real estate developer Rilea Group, together with its marketing agency Cervera, used Satterwhite’s iconic images of Paul Newman as a race car driver and of Stevie Wonder in a wide-ranging marketing campaign promoting one of its new short‑term residential projects. The photographs and Newman’s publicity rights appeared across digital brochures, open house notices, tradeshow displays, outdoor advertising, videos and other promotional materials—all without Satterwhite’s or NO Limit’s permission.

The Firm secured a settlement addressing these uses and reinforcing the importance of respecting photographers’ exclusive rights in their creative works and respecting the rights of individuals to control the commercial use of their name, image and likeness.

Mr. Satterwhite and NO Limit were represented by Partner Robert Allen and Associate Jason Linger.
