Glaser Weil is pleased to announce that Partner Jan Weir, Of Counsel Kathrine Brandt, and Associate Stephen Underwood have joined the firm. Based in the firm’s Newport Beach office, the IP litigators offer distinct specialties in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, neuroscience, and physics.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jan, Kathrine, and Stephen to the team -- all of which bring a wealth of knowledge and rare specialties that are valuable to furthering our department’s capabilities,” said Partner and Intellectual Property Department Chair Lawrence M. Hadley.
Mr. Weir focuses his practice in technically difficult, high-stakes cases in federal court and successfully argues cases before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Court of Appeals, including the Federal Circuit for more than thirty-five years.
He represents clients in various Life Science industries, including Pharmaceutical, Organic Polymer Chemistry, Medical Devices, Medical Robotics, Software, DNA and Protein Patent Protection, as well as the computing arts, including Internet Connectivity and Semiconductor Manufacturing.
Mr. Weir earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of Law. He studied undergrad at University of California, Irvine and received his B.S.

Ms. Brandt’s experience includes counseling clients on patent litigations and inter partes proceedings before USPTO. She has advised clients, such as startup companies and the Neurocure Department of the Charité, Berlin on patent prosecution and intellectual property portfolios, including drafting provisional applications, scope of patent rights, potential infringement opinions and freedom to operate.
Her educational career includes studying at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, she earned her M.S. at the Humboldt-Universitaet, Berlin. Prior to her time in Germany, she received her B.S. at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Leveraging his technical background, Mr. Underwood has effectively handled patent matters in a variety of technological fields, including electronics, computer software/hardware, motion sensors/MEMS devices, RFID technology, medical devices, industrial processes, mechanical devices, elevators, escalators, consumer products, and more.
Mr. Underwood attended and received his J.D. at George Washington University Law School. He earned his B.S. at the California Institute of Technology.
