Alexander J. Suarez

Alexander Suarez is an associate in Glaser Weil's Litigation Department. Alexander specializes in commercial disputes and business litigation. He represents clients in complex commercial litigation involving insurance recovery issues, banking and financial services, and real estate. 

Alexander is experienced in all phases of litigation, from filing and answering complaints, through discovery, trial, and appeals. Alexander has trial experience in both California state and federal courts and also has experience in arbitration. Alexander has considerable law and motion experience, having successfully challenged complaints in both state and federal courts, including via motions to dismiss and demurrers, motions to strike, anti-SLAPP motions, and motions for summary judgment. 

As a former transactional attorney, Alexander also has an extensive background in corporate law. He has supported clients with mergers and acquisitions, private equity financings, securities regulation, and general corporate governance. Alexander’s experience as a transactional attorney is particularly valuable in representing business entities in litigation, as he is sensitive not only to their legal concerns, but also their business needs. 

Alex's experience includes his representation of: 

• An energy company against claims brought in both state and federal court. After securing dismissal of the federal claims, he successfully moved to have the state court action stricken pursuant California’s anti-SLAPP statute. Alexander also argued for and obtained attorneys’ fees for his energy company client. 
• A public agency in federal bankruptcy court after the agency, acting as landlord, evicted a tenant. When the tenant petitioned for bankruptcy and attempted to halt eviction proceedings, invoking the automatic bankruptcy stay, Alexander helped establish that the public agency’s unlawful detainer action extinguished the debtor-in-possession’s interests in the property such that the bankruptcy estate retained no possessory interest in the premises. He also helped in securing the Ninth Circuit’s Bankruptcy Appellate Panel affirmance of the bankruptcy court’s ruling in favor of the public agency client. 
• A telecommunications company in a dispute with its landlord over the validity of multiple site lease terminations, following the telecom’s decommissioning of an obsolete wireless network. Alexander assisted the telecom to win on summary judgment and played a key role in securing the dismissal of a public reporting corporate parent, based on his understanding of the assignment of liabilities following a corporate merger, which ultimately led to the parent company’s dismissal for lack of personal jurisdiction.
